Worsley Plant were delighted recently that their very own Brian Carroll received the 2018 Demolition Man of the Year Award. It was a fantastic achievement so we thought we’d get a little more insight into the man behind the award! But first a reminder of why he won:
The NFDC stated why Brian was so deserving of the title:
“Brian has given so much to the Federation, working tirelessly for Demo Expo 2017 to the benefit of both ISPs and Corporate Members. Brian was involved in all stages of the planning, set up and running of Demo Expo to ensure the event was the success it was. The NFDC wished to acknowledge and celebrate this success by honouring Brian with Demolition Man of the Year Award.”
The most powerful voice in the demolition industry, the NFDC has championed the standards and professionalism of its members for more than 75 years. That’s why, at Worsley Plant, we haven’t looked on this Award lightly. MD, Sean Heron adds: “For one of our team members to win such a prestigious award is fantastic. Brian fully deserves this great achievement. His knowledge of the industry is a great benefit for the company as it is one of the key industries in which we operate.”
So let’s find out a little bit more about Brian Carroll, who joined our team at Worsley Plant back in September 2015 to take on the role of General Manager Southern, setting up a new facility to feed London and the south of England, where he has since been responsible for successfully running the facility and generating sales in this area.
Brian originates from Essex and is now based in Suffolk. As a young lad, Brian had his heart set a totally different career path. His dream was to be a Policeman, but as he wore glasses this unfortunately wasn’t to be. He was also very skilled at football and was due to have a trial with Crystal Palace, but an injury meant he couldn’t pursue this route either. Instead, he left school and became an apprentice Toolmaker which involved him working abroad assembling jigs and fixtures for the Automobile trade. This role allowed him to travel all over the world, experiencing different cultures and creating an impressive CV. Places he worked in included France, Germany, India and the Middle East.
During this role he became involved with Kocurek and decided to join them. Again this allowed him to travel to places such as the USA, Europe and Russia. The Demolition Industry has since become integral to Brian’s career and he couldn’t imagine doing anything else now. Prior to Worsley Plant he had progressed to General Manager at Kocurek, building High Reach Demo machines, a role he enjoyed but he was keen to further his career. He made the move to Worsley Plant after considering several offers and decided that this one was right for him. The challenge of establishing the new depot and network of customers appealed to him most.
Brian has been closely involved with the NFDC for a while now. As an ISP member at Kocurek, he attended some previous Demo Expo events and was eventually asked to help out with organising the event, taking the lead role in 2017. He has also assisted with creating the NFDC Attachment Guidance Notes and supporting them wherever possible. He has also widened his credibility in the Demolition Industry by sitting an IDE (Institute of Demolition Engineers) Exam and becoming an Associate Member. He has since progressed to full membership – a rare achievement for someone from a non Demolition company.
With all this work, there’s still time for play and relaxation. Outside of work Brian enjoys family life with his children and grandchildren. He is also a keen golfer, enjoys swimming and cycling and is a lifelong Liverpool fan.
